About The Good Study Guide

Developing your learning skills is one of the best investments you can make. We all need to be lifelong learners now. Whether you are an experienced student or just starting out this book will stimulate, guide and support you. It will make you think about yourself and how your mind learns. And it will change forever the way that you study.

Topics include:

  • motivating yourself and managing your time
  • taking full advantage of your computer
  • reading with concentration and understanding
  • developing flexible note-taking strategies
  • getting the most from seminars and workshops
  • making presentations
  • researching online
  • handling numbers and charts with confidence
  • writing clear, well argued assignments
  • doing yourself justice in exams.

The Good Study Guide, a bestseller for over a decade, has helped over half a million students. For this new edition it has been thoroughly revised and expanded to address the challenges of studying in a rapidly changing world where computers and the internet have become basic study tools. It has five new chapters but the approach remains the same using case studies and examples of real-life study tasks, accompanied by activities, to help you reflect on your current strategies.

Comments on this edition:

I am currently working through the Good Study Guide and have reached chapter 11. I would just like to say how much I am enjoying the book and how well, I feel, it is written. After already completing one degree in business and IT, (somone told me Id never be clever enough for what I wanted to do; psychology), I have begun another degree through the open university in psychology. Thanks to the book I am now looking forward to tackling my first assignment! I believe even after I have finished reading it cover to cover, I will still be coming back to it throughout the course. I will, without reservation, be recommending this book. Thank you so much.

Would just like to say having read chapter 5 and most of chapter 6 of the Good Study Guide, how these two chapters have changed my way I`m reading and taking notes. Since reading the chapters things have become much clearer and I have become more critical of the pieces I`m reading. The reading is taking me longer but I feel I`m absorbing the material better than I did before. And my note taking is much more in depth.

Gary, Student

The huge success of The Good Study Guide is due to its inspired use of case material and disarmingly easy style. It draws students into deep reflection on their learning, then guides them towards drawing practical conclusions. The effect is compelling. Students frequently comment on how the book transforms their understanding of learning. I myself refer to it throughout my teaching. As a tutor with a particular responsibility for developing Study Skills it is indispensable.

The new version puts the Good Study Guide out ahead of the field once again.

I didn’t think the original could be improved. Now I see how wrong I was.
